It's a wood top - solid wood but pieced together for a butcher block style look. The natural table top is a light finish, and the legs and supports are pristine white. Very easy to put together - all I had to do was put the legs on.
The chairs came in a separate box, assembly required but certainly not difficult. All I had to do was assemble the legs, which were already partly assembled - I just had to put the support bar in the middle then attach them to the seat of the chair.
WORD OF ADVICE: This advice applies to all kitchen tables and chairs in general and not just this set - if you want your chairs to last longer, if you must move them, then pick them up by the seat and not the back of the chair. This will preserve the strength of the backs of the chairs. If you must move the table, lift it and move it rather than scooting it. This will help keep the legs strong.
Also, if you are on a tile or linoleum floor, consider attaching a piece of felt to the bottoms of the chair legs and table legs to preserve the table legs and chairs - and keep your floors nice, too. The stress of scooting a table or chairs across a floor or during normal use without some kind of cushion can cause more wear and weaken the legs, not to mention what it can do to your floor. Felt will slide easily and if it wears down is easy to replace.
MORE ADVICE: About the table - the finish is nice, but when you wash the table top off it's always a good idea to dry it with a dry cloth afterwards, especially if your cloth contains any bleach water or soapy water. If the cloth you're using to wash the table off with has bleach or soap, then it's a good idea to do a rinse then dry so as to not ruin the finish of the wood over time. I would also suggest a vinyl table cloth to cover the table for general use - just to help keep the table nice. This can help protect your table from stains, as well.
